Philly’s First Soccer Teams
1884 was the year when soccer first began in Philadelphia. The American football Association was the first governing body for soccer in the U.S. The first teams in the city included the Philadelphia Hibernians and Philadelphia Wanderers. These teams had limited success and never won a American cup.
The Philadelphia Atoms
The Philadelphia Atoms were a successful team that played from 1973 to 1976. The teams success was limited to winning a NASL title against Dallas Tornado in their first year. After a couple of mishaps, the team was eventually sold to Mexican clubs.
Although the soccer teams in Philly ran into some unfortunate times, they have still managed to draw big crowds to their stadium. In the last 5 years, the city has seen fans in excess of 35,000 attending the soccer games.
